American Education During the 1960's
- The 1960s were a time of educational innovation
- Schools and teachers had the freedom to try creative ideas in an effort to improve education
- Most significantly this changes affected students who were disadvantaged economically or educationally
1962 - Manpower Development and Training Act (MDTA)
Authorized a three year program aimed at retraining workers displaced by new technology.
1964 - Civil Rights Act, Title VI
Ended unequal application of voter registration requirements and racial segregation in schools.
1965 - Operation Head Start
Provides comprehensive early childhood education, health, nutrition, and parent involvement services to low-income childern and their families.

1963 - Bilingual Education
Coral Way Elementary first bilingual school in the U.S, students received half a day English and the other half Spanish instruction.
1965 - Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA)
Law signed by president Johnson who believed that "full educational opportunity" should be "our first national goal."
1969 - National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP)
Designed to provide data on student achievement in various subjects and are released as The Nation's Report Card.
