1920's (1921-1940) The Great Depression
Impact Economy On Schools
- During "The Great Depression", public schools faced a shortage of cash since many citizens were unable to pay their taxes.
- Teachers payments would not be good because they were often decreased or eliminated and the course offerings cut back to just basic subjects.
- The kids would sometimes won't have their supplies or their text books because many of
- their parents lost their jobs and didn't have enough money to buy them their necessary materials for school.
- The bad thing was that most of the children would leave the school and would start to work so they could help their parents.
- Then the federal government stepped in to help them. Funds helped support some schools to hire teachers and purchase supplies. With the federal money, they offered the children free hot lunches.
Dick And Jane books helped the children with their reading skills.
